Step right up Ladies and Gents!

Mister Bharper and myself will attempt to converse on the topic of Unfinished Designologues. We have absolutely no idea where we will end up, we don’t even know whether we have enough to say about the subject but -and this is a promise- we wíll finish it.

Hahhaha.. Classic… I have many ideas for this one. should be fun!

At first, when I saw the empty thumbnail, I was like, WTF? Glitch in the Matrix?

bharper

On, second thought, Maybe I’ll just never respond. Leaving it unfinished forever. Wouldn’t that be a beautifull performance piece.

maleachi

i was just thinking the same thing :-)

bharper

Totally Looks Unfinished.

What’s up with all the darkness lately b? You feelin ok? Do you need to talk?

bharper

are you refering to my “muddyness”?…

:p

NeonLotus

Mud is Brown. For a good example check out Almost Perfect, Img3 But this is a very nice piece, it actually looks complete in an unfinished kinda way…

bharper

NeonLotus - Welcome to my Shit (also brown) list. You bugger!

jesspc

Heavy use of brushes - but you make it look good!

Beerad

Cool Cool =)

NeonLotus

Oh yeah…I’m trying to ease you into being mad at me rather that it hit you all at once when you see my next post.. But for real-i’m just having fun and I really do like this piece a lot.

bharper

I’m just having fun to dude… I’m just trying to entice you into making your next image. Glad you like this one. I would hate to disapoint you.

maleachi

Here we go, mister Harper.

(This is actually a picture of a 14th century building somewhere in Ghent, the city I live in. They are trying to convert it into a 21th century 5 star hotel. But something went horribly wrong along the way and the works have been shut down for years now. To call it unfinished would be an understatement.)

Rip it up!

bharper

We may never finish at this rate…

we’re doing a lousy job :-)

(superb ripping of and adding to image 03)

bharper

by the way maleachi, the fonts were inspired from your website…

Lincoln

I’m diggin these last two. brushes and all. but its the color and clipping, really.

bharper

i spent many hours on this last one.. (2 or 3 hrs.)… and I agree lincoln.. it’s not so much about the burshes or the fonts.. altho, they help.. I really enjoyed working with the yellow in this one.

maleachi

spread the word: misprintedtype is the king of fonts!

Anyway, I got some more photos of that hotel from hell, i posted one at my other site here . that site is in Dutch, but feel free to wander around anyway :-)

I’ll work on a reply on this as soon as i finished my reply for no. 312: Alice in Wonderland

cheers, M

bharper

Where you at maleachi?

bharper

Looking at this last image from work, gives me an idea for a tip to share with the community:

If you plan on using a transparent phtotoshpt style background, you should create an actual layer in your file with that checkered pattern on it so that people with lame browsers don’t loose the feeling of the transparency.

inman

No way, this is a design site. Screw the lame-os and their lame browsers. There are higher quality, free alternatives available and nobody’s stopping them from upgrading.

maleachi

i’m lost in work for the moment. but i’m still with you Harp.

(and i pity the fool who doesn’t firefox his way around the web.)

zdoob

is there much of a difference between firefox and safari?

bharper

I still use IE at work. Don’t think it’s so bad.

inman

Depends who you talk to zdoob. I actually prefer Safari because it has inline spellcheck in web forms (control-click and check out the Spelling contextual menu—now all I need to worry about is its and it’s).

But the problem browser B described was IE PC-specific and to which the best (free, secure, superior, etc) alternative is Firefox.

maleachi

and now for something completely different!

WTF IS THIS?

I like the type tho..

cJw

roofle!

Diggin the use of img 04 - where’s the response for this, B? … or is it… unfinished? :p

bharper

im trying to find hope amidst the wreckage…

no offense maleachi.. but this is toataly off from what we had going..

bharper

this one took a while to finish..

let’s keep it on track

i’d appreciate some real feedback on this one, if anyone thinks of anything..

NeonLotus

Actually Harp this is one of your better pieces. I can tell you took a bit longer on this one, visually I like the piece, good composition. I would like to see what would happen with a small hint of contrast color mixed in there somewhere, I appreciate the minimal color scheme but for some reason I am not seeing much depth from this image, its kinda bland. I also like the subtle grunge and texture work, overall nice image.

zdoob

cool image.

i like the monochromatic aspect of it and wouldn’t want another color in there. the one thing that i’m not so into are the pixellated parts - particularly along the bottom, top, and around the word DESIGNOLOGUE.

i think this was the same gripe i had about this image.

arthaus

The image in itself I like, quite a lot actually. The only problem I have with it is that the grunge looks too forced or stylised, unifying the image to make it ‘complete’, as opposed to an image which looks ‘unfinished’. If that makes any sense.

bharper

that’s sorta been the paradox all along. to make images that have an unfinished “feel” but that are actualy quite finished.

thanks for all the feedback you guys. i think everything that has been said is very true and right on.

EuRip

Nice Work Harp, its good to see u putting in a little more time in, it really shows. Is the sharp “x” part of the unfinished Feel (no Grunge). i agree with Zdoob on pixellated parts, But over all good work.

Were can i get that hog that plays tapes? ; )

bharper

I can give you the bike and boombox mixtape brushes.. but not the bike itself.. :p

i didn’t really put more time into this one then normal.. not consciously anyways.. maybe im improving… :P

cJw

outta curiosity, b, how long is ‘normal”?

bharper

1.5 to 3 hours depedning…

capricious

I like this except for the brush at the bottom.. And I agree that there should be some varying color.. Nice composition, slides downward and then is picked up and brought to the top again.. That makes no sense, you say? I can’t explain it any better.

bharper

your eye meakes a triangle shape. it makes sense.

bharper

maleachi, i hope my harsh words and stupid ways haven’t scared you off…

where are you brother?
