I was fairly happy with how this turned out, although it somewhat took on a life of it’s own…
Tear it up : my first logue. : )
Ooooo, it’s eerie. Kinda biological, or gynecological! I’ll respond ASAP.
ack - gyne!?
I can see it, but I was hoping no one would label it as such. ^.^
No, don’t worry, I think it’s probably just me, I can see lungs or something in there too…
I was dreaming something else up before I saw this, but now I have another idea, so hopefully I’ll be able to squeeze that original one in if the ‘logue swings that way later…
Take your time; there’s no hurry. =]
I am curious to see how this ‘logue develops, as seems it could be such a restraining theme.
maybe it could be enriched with some more typographical risks? seems a bit bit safe at the moment in terms of both type and color?
Duly noted; I’ll just chalk that up to my being a ‘logue virgin and not wanting to get ripped too hard.
(no inneundo intended, really.)
This image makes me feel gross and uneasy. If that was the intent, congrats on a job well done.
Not particularly the intent, um, thanks? Sorry? Glad I could help? =]
Ya know, now that I look at this image with the ‘this makes me sick’ perspective in mind, I can completely understand and I hope that we can ignore the prevous references to biology and move on so as to not cause further discomfort.
Of course, I remember from high school art class ‘If it gets any reaction, good or bad, consider it art.’ Whether that’s a shallow view or not, I still consider any reaction better than passing it up.
Thanks for the Luv.
Overall, this is a nice image, especially in terms of the color palette. However, as this logue progresses, I would like to see something a little less obvious. A mirrored image is the always the first choice for an image about symmetry, but it IS the first image, so it’s an ample jumping off point.
I agree mallficia, although I think the actual purpose of this ‘logue is to explore exactly that. cJw and I were discussing it in the lounge, and I think he’s interested in structural symmetry so I expect that’s what we’ll develop (there’s plebty of scope in just that). I’d hate for the images here to be disappointing to people because they were too literal, as the ‘logue is simply about symmetry at this stage. Who knows though…
Why am I seeing sea turtles in this?
Aha! Finally someone sees them!
hehe j/k - there are no sea turtles in this pic; I can almost see it… are you feeling ok, sketchy? :p
OK, so I went mechanical, kept the blue and the 3 yellow lines pulsing from the centre, but mirrored the theme, so that’s a kind of symmetry I guess.
This is gorgeous. I love the way you evolved the lines into a pattern.
I love the continuation of the lines… hrm…
Glad you like it, I’ve got to say I’m nervous as hell on here as this is my first go at a ‘logue too.
I was originally trying to make a Brundlefly out of machinery as a nod back to the biological starting point, but I have to admit I wanted to get something up, so I cut it short where I was rather than overdo it.
Were it not for editing other peoples’ code, I’d probably have more time this afternoon to work on #3, but, alas, I do not.
Stay tuned. =]
Yes, Excellent first post..
I think I’m making it harder for myself to get away from the obvious than it should be. I need to let it go; stay with graphite longer; learn to relax and enjoy the process more…
Regardless, here’s #3.
Love the magnetic field lines in the centre, but it’s a shame your thumbnail isn’t symmetrical!
You’ve caught me off-guard with that one, I’m going to have to take some time to think about what to do next, hmm….
The reason I went with that thumb was because it wasn’t symmetrical - I had 5 possibilities and that one won out.
If you’d tell me what you’re expecting, I might be able to come closer. :p
No criticism implied, that’s the point of being involved in a designologue, you get things you weren’t expecting! To be honest I’m not sure what I was expecting anyway.
I like the image, although I think we maybe need to have more of an object of focus in the middle, composition-wise. I might try to limit the symmetry in my response as it is very tempting to spread it across the canvas.
From a practical point of view, it’s tricky doing these, as of course you can only really do half of it and then mirror it once you’re happy. The amount of times I flattened it all, flipped it and reverted to make a small alteration before deciding I didn’t like it and flattening again etc etc…
I agree completely, although I’m trying to NOT make half a pic and mirror it … the first image wound up like that anyways, but I’m trying to involve the entire canvas for the process.
If you hadn’t noticed, there are slight flaws in the symmetry in this image - in the middle, actually, where you suggest we increase focus. ;)
I hadn’t noticed, but yeah, you’re right. What are the circular components? They looked like cartwheels but they’re not perfectly round.
Anyway, I’ve had an idea for the next image so I’ll try and upload soon. I’m going away for the weekend so there may be a delay, hope it’s worth it!
They are cartwheels, actually; there were two of them, submerged in a flooded field, one slightly behind and to the side of the other.
i understand how it might be difficult to break out of the mirror image motif, but i’d really like to see more conceptual imagery - instead of just visual symmetry.
…though maybe it IS here and has gone over my head - it happens all the time! :(
Yeah, I’m actually thinking of a way to do both as I know cJw was mainly interested in actual visual symmetry, but I want to actually say something with my next image if I can.
These are very Rorschach Ink blot type things*. Any reason why you’re maintaining the asymmetry as opposed to exploring other forms of symmetry, like patterns or tiling or kaleidoscope etc?
* Well not quite but you get what I mean.
No particular reason, although we’ve both agreed that we want to get away from the visual aspect of symmetry and explore other possibilities…
Shiro claims a response should be up soon. :D
Yes, my response is coming, but now arthaus has blown my big suprise by mentioning the ink blots! Damn!
OK, so I was thinking that this ‘logue should be symmetrical too, so the first 4 images have been about structural symmetry and the next 4 will be about conceptual symmetry as cJw and I have discussed. I didn’t only want to get one stab at the structural symmetry so here’s my 2nd image before we get all deep and philosophical!
Oh, and I’ve been thinking a lot about girls lately…
Man i really like that last piece, probably best out of the whole pack so far.
The only thing i would look at is removing the blur on top of the image. This would have looked so much better with crisp lines.
Still gave u a 4 though.
Thanks inVZbl, I added the blur to give it an inkblot quality like the psychological tests you do to reveal your personality. If I was to do it again though I think I’d get my hands dirty and blot some real ink for parts of it…
Dig the sneaky color gradient on it; where did those colors come from? :p
Time’s restriced right now (quite busy @ work) so bear with me, but, I’m on it.
Well I thought seeing as we had done quite a lot of blues, I would do the symmetrical thing and go for pink, as it’s the opposite and girly too.
Oh and don’t worry about rushing, I kept you waiting so it’s only fair!
Image 2 and 4 match so well the color on 4 goes great with the blue.
Finally… got the time and the muse. ; ]
Hope to see you at the show!
Ah, I get it, and I love the ambigram word “Symmetry”. I had been working on one of those for later myself! Nice use of the previous colour too.
Website’s rubbish though…
I’m actually off on holiday on Monday for a fortnight, so apologies but that means there will propbably be a bit of a lul before the next image.
You didn’t actually expect me to toss together a website as well, did ya Shiro?
I wish I could take credit for the ambigram text, but I cannot… I am quite happy with the way it turned out, though. :D
Enjoy your vaca - !
Bah, now that I look at this again, I’m not quite happy with the gradient on teh CD… of course, I didn’t even ‘see’ that then.
You are your own worst critic n such. ;
I just noticed that image 5 has the lowest rating of all three of mine in this ‘logue; can anyone give me some reasons/insight please?
I thought I did well to include conceptual symmetry as well as visual on this one - what gives?
(Pull no punches; I’m here to learn! :)
its sorta boring. it is symeetrical. if you stand back off the image, it looks like a audio casette.
i think the little patterin inside the discs is cool. it just doesnt have much that grabs me conceptually or visualy.
lots of flat, white spacce
I can see the boring; I considered it ‘clean’ in my mind as it was developing. Duly noted… as well as lots of white space, good points. ;)
Oh - and I didn’t see the cassette tape thing at all but it’s very true.
It was just buggin me that it rated so low, but no one had anything (even bad) to say about it.
Thanks for the insights, BHarper! =]
I’m always available for some obvious, semi-insightfull critiquing. It pisses me off how there are hundreds of lurkers on this site who don’t say anything.
But, then again, you have to inpsire people to talk.
I’m suprised you guys haven’t started playing with images of humans. We are symetrical too ya know?
I’ve done some interesting experiments with human’s ‘symmetry’, but it always ends up disconcerting, on some base level… I suspect because none of us are exactly symmetrical and when we see it that way, it’s eerie.
We’ve also decided to try to lean more towards conceptual symmetry as the visual side of it got boring fairly quickly.(thanks to me - shiro is humbling me, imho)
Thx again, BH. :>
wow. i can’t believe that the cassette wasn’t intentional! it’s the first thing i noticed.
i like the idea of making a band based on the previous image, but there just isn’t enough here. it looks like you came up with an idea, but never went with it. i’m not really sure what this is supposed to be… is it a poster?
Damn. I shouldn’t have admitted not seeing the tape thing. :o
It was a gig poster, mailer, postcard, w/e you like it as… I just took the previous image and turned it into a band, albeit incompletely. I was just so excited I pulled off the vinyl vs CD images well I considered it done and went with it as is.
So, maybe then, the tape thing was intentional… but subconciously?
Back from holiday, so I’ll do my best to get something nice up for you all to see ASAP. Gutted that the tape thing has been discussed while I’ve been away as that was the road I was going to go down but I’m sure I’ll come up with something else…
02 & 04 are fuckin rockin! my 2 cents deposited.
They’re also quite humbling - boy am I glad I picked Shiro as my first conspirator ever. :p
The composition isn’t doing much for me (I recognize the symmetry but the bg is a little too stark) but I love the palindrome logotype.
Hey, don’t worry cJw, I think we’re both having fun here and it’s nice we do it differently to each other - kinda symmetrical!
Anyway, just wanted to check in to reassure you I’m still around and that I just had the brainwave which I’m going to base IMG06 on, so I REALLY mean to put it up soon.
I think perhaps the Sith have Shiro.
Either that, or he’s just very busy. o.0
Alive I am!
Yes, VERY busy at the moment, so sorry for going quiet but I really do know what I’m going to do next, just need to find time to sit down and do it.
Glad to see you’re still around, shiro! I was beginning to wonder… looking forward to #6!
Looks like a bone marrow scan, very strange, but only half a designologue really!!
