… although I don’t want that to stop anyone else from commenting …
hehe
I really like this image. It is sometimes hard to come up with an intro image that doesn’t go to far or say to much, and this is a great starting point for what should be an interesting theme to explore.
it sorta annoys me that i cant read that text.. but i guess that’s part of the mystique…
Jesus man, it’s October! That red better be blood!
clean and simple, Nice!
i really like the composition. nice movement.
Fresh Composition, Tho I cant help but agree with Inman.. Great start.
Was this response pre-planned? The connection from those little white bits on the edge of the first to the “RA” element of this just seems too clever!
Rev,
I assure you that the response was NOT preplanned, but I did secretly hope that Jason would do something with them!
Great volley, Jason. I particularly love the black serif on a white ground to counter my own text. This is definitely heading where I hoped it would go …
Nope, not pre-planned… I just didn’t get where he was going with Subtraction from the first image. I was looking for something to use to take it a bit further, or I suppose, make it recede a bit more.
clever =)
“Jesus man, it’s October! That red better be blood!”
Umm… Pardon? I can’t be the only one who doesn’t get that.
I like the cleaness of the 2nd volley and the illegible textof the first :D
(psst mallficia, that little yellow pencil next to your name is an edit button ;D)
Ha. Stupid rookies …

A new perspective.
Subtraction is all about the negative, reducing and countering. If horizontal movement starts, I counter with vertical movement. If white starts to take over on the canvas, black retaliates and red neutralizes.
Nice. I can totally see this evolving into one of those trendy, 3D/vector AfterEffects animations with some spastic d’n’b thrown in for effect.
Thanks Inman. Hmmm … maybe that’s something to think about for the next version. Flash/After Effects battles? F:SNLG or AE:SNLG?
Reminds me of:
Well done, bharper. It’s one of my favorites and my inspiration for this piece.
I left my 3d glasses at home Stan, what am I looking at here? :)
Don’t worry, Stan, I’ll handle this. Shaun, I’d say it’s an M and an N with a line in the middle. Or possibly another M. There.
What’s with the depth-defying gradients then?
The gradient is a leftover from the last image, as are the vertical stem from the M and the 2 vertical lines to the right of it. It’s an M and a Y for what it’s worth. And shame on you inman, 3D images are stereoscopic and require 2 opposing offset colors, like red & blue. Get your head out of your ass. ; D
Sure, sure. I understand where all the elements are coming from but what are they doing in this composition?
It is just another play at a visual interpretation of subtraction, including dicing up of the negative space with the letterforms, and one could argue, the dissolution of the distance between the viewer and the image.
Bending and twisting text is tricky, theres a fine line between a masterpiece and Wordart.
Mr. Jess PC, I like the way you left that one hanging …
Jesspc, I agree, but I’m not sure how to take that.
I like this last image for some reason, thats just my initial reaction to it. The line and perspective it creates is kinda nice…
I wish these would more concisely and intuitively evoke the idea of subtraction. If I look at this series all by itself, it doesn’t say “subtraction” to me, and even with the accompanying discussion, the images still ask us to do a lot of digging, without great reward.
I agree with you. I feel like this one could have benefitted from an almost overworked starter image. I do feel like we are both really stretching to stay on theme.
Cowpiesurprise, thanks for that comment. I wish more people were as honest as you. My self esteem would be lower, but I’d be a better designer. Honestly, I’ve been disappointed conceptually with all of my images so far. I think monkeycyclops’s images have been more successful because my images have been too subject-based. Anyone have suggestions on how to bring it back conceptually?
The next image has only two pixels, the following only one, and finish with none? Now, what to do with just two pixels…
I’ll hold my comments until later in this conversation so that I don’t influence the response.
