wide open concept… springtime. We went for a hike the other day in the mountains near Santa Barbara. Flowers all over, very nice.
could you explain what im looking at here. i saw this before, when u posted it. and im curious what the diferent components are in this image?
just two images really. We walked past that tree to the right, and I just took a picture of what was at my feet. That’s the image on top of the landscape. I put the yellow flower there to balance the composition…
Conceptually, I’m with you.. I love it.
Execution-wise, I think you could have done a little better. The ground flowers are too dark and not “springy”-looking at all. And you might have put a bit more thought into the shape of the ragged edge on the right… It’s far inferior to the one on the left. The big yellow flower might be a bit too big.
I don’t want to come across too harsh… your first ‘Logue and all… but constructive criticism is generally encouraged.
yeah I agree, but there’s something about the way you cut around the left border of flowers that I really dig. I would have preferred it if the trees in the background were centered in the space and maybe if the flower illustration was smaller or something
You’re both right. And I’m glad to hear some good critique. It’s very helpful.
Yeah, when I first started playing with the image of the flowers on the ground I wanted more contrast from the landscape…. but, turning the brightness down like that wasn’t the best way to acheive it. I guess I was letting my design be dictated by the images I happened to have on hand, which is never a good thing. I’ll do better next time…
that tree image has a bugs life digital quality to me..
i dig that part..
I wouldn’t mind some feedback on this one.
My mom doesn’t like it.
I was trying to get a ‘faded print’ kinda look.
Your mom is wack. This is some dope sh*t. I love the colors. The texture reminds me somewhat of Rothko, which is a good thing.
I really love this.
Personally I think that the yellow background is overbearing, but as a whole, I like the yellow, just too loud.
I like the print look. Looks like one of those tater prints or something. Brings back good memories when I used to do linoleum block printing.
The image definately says “spring” in more than one way…hahaha.
Looks nice and retro like it is from the 50’s or 60’s if that is what you were after?
Reminds me also of a children’s book.
Honestly, I think it would have been stronger with a smaller yellow border or if the yellow was not so loud.
Just trying to do what I wish people would do for my images instead of dropping the 1 or 2 bomb with no comment.
I have to disagree with you glory. I think the choice and size of yellow is stupendous. This color vibrates intensely with the blue green of the inner image, and thus is more powerful and unique. Great color sensitivity.
What I would like to have seen though is the edges of the blue green image be skewed a little so it is not so even on either side. It would make more interesting space.
I would have liked to see the border widths a little smaller and more uneven, if that makes any sense. I dig the yellow and the aquaish green color. Another thing is the dashed line is a little heavy and competes with the lines on the littlle girl. Other than that I love it. It feels very romantic (not in the ooh i love you way) and reminds me of 1950’s school book illustrations. It has a worn fabric look that is really nice.
Overall I dig it.
very very nice. Yeah, I think the border smaller and even would be slightly better, but I gave it a 4 anyway because it rocks.
hmm… does the little girl have a shaved head?? cool.
yeah, the yellow is pretty intense but I like it with the other colors. its pulled from the yellow in the sun in the 1st image.
I do kinda wish I’d skewed it like rev said. I played with the size and position of the inner image trying to keep the yellow from looking like a frame and more like the paper (or cloth or whatever) its supposed to be printed on.
I think this shit is Pimptabulous. You convey spring (obviously in more ways than one). You’ve used elements from the previous image (how you got those photos of tree to look like a print is beyond me). And the little girl is just ridiculous.
I love the border. It screams freshness and life — which is the epitomy of spring. The subtle texture throughout all of it keeps it from feeling like entirely separate elements. I would get this printed on a T-shirt if I didn’t walk around naked everyday.
I like it! I agree with Rev, a little more play with the negative space (the yellow) into the blue/green foreground border would have made the image spark more. Did you sketch the little girl yourself? Looks very Bic pen to me… In a good way.
seems like spring to me… you even got your cool colours to come out warm.
hey everyone, thanks for the feedback
except Rev…my mom says your head is wack
okay, no she didn’t
she didn’t know what ‘wack’ meant
I liked the color pallette and the line, so I played with those elements.
nice post. I like the use of flat colors in it, but I wanna see you pull some of the mad textures from your paintings. Is all of that on your site, traditional painting, or is some of it electronic?
I actually tried to steal the grass painting off your site to work into my response to your first image but you had to go and protect yo shit.
thanks… yeah, it’s kind a foofy isn’t it? All that pattern stuff is just acrylic paint… traditional media is my main thing…
directory browsing should be on on my site, try this
thats awesome. Some of it was so good, I doubted that it was actually paint. The cactuses (cacti? cactu?…yeah sure, cactu) particularly got me.
Looks like alergy season is on it’s way! I need a Claritin..
Is it just me or does anyone else think this is cornball shit. I just dont feel you Dog. And people are shiting all over my George Bush piece. Some of you just seem to look more like sheep to a wolf every passing day.
Hey thanks for the response Plat-E-
I gave your George Bush image a 1 because it’s the design equivalent of Jerry Springer.
I gave your ugly peice a 4 though because I thought you really brought that one up a notch.
ok? No sweat if you don’t like my image. Just don’t be an ass about it.
Thanks Lincoln. I haven’t put up any of my recent paintings for a while. I’ll do that soon, get some critique from you guys. I’m trying to experiment with different styles, it would be good to get some feedback.
I decided to keep the same boring composition as my last one.
just to piss you off
but less yellow at least, for all you yella haters.
I was looking at the 3rd image and the wind lines in the middle reminded me of a film strip.
it got me thinking about time and seasons looping.
that’s how I got to this.
Very nice. The drop shadow is a bit foggy but I can appreciate the reuse of anethon’s elements. Clever use of icons to move the theme >> to. ;D
Anethon, nice job handling Plat-E’s comment. Don’t let him push you around just because he’s friends with a T-rex :D
are you pointing to fall for a reason? do you wanna fastforward into fall and then rewind back too it when its finished? i’m just curious knowing they’re opposites… spring/fall; growing/dying; happy/sad; optimism/pessimism; etc/not etc.
good work tying in the film reel to the cycle of time, because like the seasons it dictates what comes in the next frame.
spring into fall
fall into spring
ps… i gave you a 3 because i felt it was better than a 2.
well, goin with the time thing, I had ‘spring forward, fall backward’ in mind…but I like to be a little vague sometimes…thanx for the 3…this one felt like a 2-3er
I wanted to use another photographic image..
also including the seasons…
Nice to see something new! Reminds me of Earth Science class years back.
congratulations…. it seems you have one of the only designologue being updated regularly these days…
there really isn’t enought time in my day to do all the things i want to do let alone have to do [work];
fear not, i’m gonna have to dust off my own designogloves and get back into the ring… sometime… soon.
This designologue has a real sense of wistfulness… I think it might seem stronger now as I’m yearning for springtime, but there’s a real sense of memory and childhood. (Including, of course, junior high textbooks…)
sorry I took so long
This is ace. I love the textures. you have really caught country-person-living-in-the-smoke kind of thing.
It reminds me of all those people who really whinge about living in London. I wish they would shut up and move to a place with grass. i was brought up there - it sucks, it’s boring and the concrete rules.
neato Lincoln. Looks like you took a page out of bearskins book on this one.. i like the book, and the female… i like the road area behind her.. somehow the fence and background photo feel to real to jive with the rest of the image. there are certain areas that i find less believable then others.. but in general, i think its strong and definately an avenue worth persuing.
yup, very nice … cool, I’m glad this is going again.
Nice work Lincoln. You and bearskin almost have me switching majors to illustration…wait a minute, I guess it’s too late for that. Oh well. Maybe I’ll experiment with my next image of B.O.W. - if you take it there, of course.
One question, what’s up with the armpit pixels? Doesn’t she polygon lasso?
I think the “realness” of the snow is what makes this work — the reality is that it’s not spring, it’s winter. Spring is today’s fiction, from the past; in the past, there were only drawings, not photographs.
But yeah, she’s got some major deodorant issues.
she’s got icicles, man. its cold.
thats a good idea… looking good.
The color really makes an abrupt change on this image vs. all the rest. I love how the book about spring keeps the colors from the earlier musings on the season. Creates a sense of longing for winter to be done, even though it has maybe just started.
Only thing I might wish to see here is for the contrast of color to be punched up even more and maybe have the girl be greyed out like the background. However, there is something to be said for your subtlety.
I gave this a four. Tight concept, great execution, designologue don’t get no better than this. (the icicles, deodorant doesn’t bother me)
Im not sure I like the fact that the background is a photo and the rest of it not… But I cant even look at the background because my eye is so drawn to the beautiful illustration! Droopy deodorant is ok.
