My biggest issue from 1 to 2 was to try to cleanse the original a bit…and it wasn’t easy. I have a propensity to making things dirty…and you already did that (my “typical” return is often a dirty regurgitated version of the original). I’m also leaning more towards incorporating as much of the original as possible…to show a progression, not restart.
Funny, it just keeps going back in time…I suppose a horse and buggy will be next?!?!
And I can’t live without “Multiply” in PS; it saves the day.
In number 1, where did the ornamentation on the letters come from? Another typeface?
Multiply and grunge-brushed layer masks are my best friends! I’m also becoming a fan of the 2 or 3px Stroke layer effect with a subtle, precise Outer Glow—set to multiply of course.
The flourishes are from a script face called Escrita and were actually a happy accident. I had originally added the text “What’s Neue?” in that face and wanted to create some ornamentation for either side. I moved one of the layers by mistake and it landed on the O of MODERNE. I liked what I saw, rotated it a little to taste, and peppered some of the other letters with the same treatment.
That nuclear family is from a discarded image I was working on for our original moderne designologue.

#@*!ing bang up job here. I love how that guy on the bottom looks as if he is doing your type setting for you. Composition is tight. My only critique is that I kind of want to see a bit of line drawing (or something linear) around the statue since it is the only thing without such treatment and is not large/bold enough to be so alone. But thats just being picky, this is sweet.
Gotcha. There’s always several things I wish I could change about these afterwards. The statue is deliberate in it’s treatment (something about old versus new?), though I would ideally redraw it to match the overall layout. There are also plenty of minor details and refinements I overlooked, but that’s the result of posting at 1:30am on a Sunday night.
I forgot how fun these are to build…though more than half my ‘design’ time is spent just searching for inspiration and a direction. Only took me 5+ months.
This is pretty good. just a few annoyances -
The type “modern” seem to overlap your typsetting friends feet.. so, it sort of breaks the plane. Also, I agree the statue feels alone, but it’s also that entire area between the statue and the building. feels flat and empty. The sky is uninspired. the black line that seperates the sky from the top portion of the images is too straight and perfect for the roughness of similar black lines in the image. I also don’t like the color of the building. It is of a yellow grey rather then the red grey in other places. just doesn’t sit right with me. The guy crouching and peering over the wall is fucking great.
I have to admit, I have similar reservations about the top black line and yellow building. But I don’t see any type overlapping the lurker.
That statue is the bomb. Too bad I’m going to have to tear it down. This is the future Dave, we can’t have progress. Same as it ever was, same as it ever was…
the “R” in modern. the top portion of the loopy part of the R. it doesnt overlap, but its just a bit messy.

I love this image.. WIsh there were a bit more color… Trying to figure out who the statue is (Winston Churchill? Clifford Ball?) and what the guy in the corner is standing on. I’m looking forward to the next image this December. ;D

Statue is actually Vladimir Lenin.
This whole piece is just not very well executed. No excuse for bad technical work. I was anxious to get it up and didn’t take enough time to refine it. I guess it turned into more of a rough than a finished product.
The yellow building hue is intentional; it is intended to clash with the antiquity of the original aesthetic. The sky is meant to feel ‘artificial,’ but obviously falls short. Ideally, I wanted a contrast of styles and treatments to be shown in the piece, ala the results of a collage (rather than a unified style). I’m not sure the plane schematic belongs (I think I was torn between a few directions in this one). I actually do like the emptiness surrounding the building, isolating the reconstruction from past elements. This image had so many conceptual revisions; at one point there was even a rhinocerous involved.
Tear it down, Inman.

Inman: For your response, I suggest researching Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. He is on some really futuristic stuff that would compliment the utopian future style that bedingfield is rocking here. Just a suggestion, plus he is an incredible architect. Them crazy asians.
I have to say that this is really well executed. So well executed that all anyone can find to nitpick about are the smallest of details, which I don’t feel are problematic. I like the uneasy open, yellowish, blue sky. I think it does look artificial. I also dig the lack of color and the collaged methodology. I think it’s tight, period, the end.
I think you could take the lasso tool and start in the lower right hand corner, and trace up to the left, around the squatting mans shoulder, up over his head, down to the base of the building, up to the top right hand corner of the building, over and down the other side untill you get to the other base of the building, then down to the left at a45 degree angle to the corner of the left side and then back under to the right corner again to complete the loop. then i would do a ctrl shft i or whatever the mac equivelant is for select inverse and hit the delete key…

That’s funny because I’ve already started on the response and that was the part the I ditched. I love the way the statue is incorporated into the lower portion of the image. I just wouldn’t have seen that while designing. I would have probably given up before successfully integrating it into my design. If only I had Mike Young’s skills and could bust out that future-structure architecture shit that he rocks so hard…

The composition here is nice. My favorite part is the city you constructed in the lower left. The little details there are soooo tight. My least favorite part is the type treatment at the top. Doesn’t seem to have the same attention to detail as the rest. Kinda sloppy just slappin it on like that.
Geeezzz you guys are really gonna force me to do something new here aren’t you… Well we will see what I can come up with.

Believe it or not, that type treatment was an intentionally sloppy slap. Progress in any medium is about building a good foundation (or appropriating an existing one) and then amending it with a new idea. History determines whether these appendages are firm ground for further development or embellishments best forgotten.
Besides, a more involved treatment was in gross conflict with that detail you appreciate. And the simplicity, the surface with no substance (as Dave quite eloquently put it in an email earlier tonight), is right in line with blue prints, the plans that outline our weighed intentions in an imperfect world.

Definitely one of my favorites. I’m just glad to see this DSNLG is back in action. Speaking of…it’s time for me to get my pixel on.
I am still not convinced. The typeface doesn’t go with the “blueprint” style for it to work like that. And it is not quite strong enough to stand on its own as an element.
