If every element of your body and brain were simulated in a machine, would that still be ‘you’?

bearskinrug

Well. As long as the genitals are intact, I would say you’re still yourself.

RevDrLuv

But if your genitals are artificial…

mrshape

ok seth..provocative question for sure.

initial toughts: the flesh, the machine…but where does a being’s experience and growth actually occur? is it at a physical level? and under what system and in what vessel can that experience occur?

answers to these questions may take more than 8 img files :) great start…02 coming soon…

mrshape

…there is a spiritual dimension

RevDrLuv

Nice start, great concept and outstanding response. This is going to be good.

Seth

Ah, nice. Got me thinking buddhist style.

fashionvictim

These are both really nice. Interesting concept nice execution.

Seth

So if there’s always a spirtitual side then I suppose it doesn’t really matter what vessel it resides in.

RevDrLuv

Wow Seth, this response is Badass. And I don’t just throw that word around lightly.

mrshape

touche! great question, working toward a worthy response…

Aarseth

It’s true. The times I’ve heard Nat utter the words “Badass” have been few and far-between.

Seth

Thanks for the blessings, Rev. And thanks also for introducing me to the site. I hope to have some fun in the DSNLGs ahead.

mrshape

would the dreams be the same?

20 years ago, March 11, 2003
Seth

In an ‘artificial’ environment I think the answer would be no, your dreams would not be the same. They would instead become an integral part of your waking existance. A lucid dream within the machine.

I love image #5 plain and simple. Awesome movement and light. Well done.

coldfire

Qoute Seth - If every element of your body and brain were simulated in a machine, would that still be ‘you’?

If simulated no it would not be you, however if you were copied into a machine then yes it would be you.

Simulated implies a representative of sorts, an imitator, a copy however is a duplicate of the original.

fashionvictim

I don’t agree, I think a copy is a copy, it’s not the original, which the copy is made from.

fashionvictim

Oh, btw, the 05 image is really beautiful!!

sanguine

this is by far my favorite so far in this dsnlg (5 that is). my only comment would be that the black type is disappearing into the background and it would be nice to be able to read it. but even without it, this is beautiful.

Seth

In response to coldfire: I see it as both a copy and a simulation. A copy in the sense that it is a duplicate of the biological patterns that make up your form, but also a simulation in that the molecular processes would not actually be occuring as they would in the environment outside the machine. They would instead be simulated as accurately as possible within the rules of the system.

mrshape

nice work seth…i like the hotair balloon in the distance to tie in img 04, the quote is great, the image is well done…i like where this is heading…

coldfire

Wow I did not even know there was text in here, Me eyes keeep going off to the left as the follow the funny shapes in the sky.

So now I think I understand wehre you are coming from on copy and simulate, in answer to your question, my answer is 42. Yes 42. I belive also it is the meaning of life?

The idea i grew up on is that the soul and the body are symbiotic. So you get rid of the orginal body and spirit goes off to the places the spirits go to. So even if you have the information in a system you maybe you but it is my belife you are spiritless…..however I am in debate about this. The very thing has been explored in Dennis Danvers Sci Fi book “Circuits of Heaven.”

mrshape

if the mechanical form is a smooth column then the human form is an organic mass. if the technological void is dark and muted then the soul of mankind is bright and vibrant. our souls cannot be copied, no two ever alike.

humans originate, machines duplicate.

Great response! Definitely thought provoking. I’ve got some images in mind already. You were right about this probably taking more than 8 images. I regret that I have but one more to give. I’ll try to make it a good one.

Seth

…of course it’s St. Patrick’s Day weekend and here in Savannah that can be quite a commotion, so expect my next image post-St. Pats.

mrshape

no problem seth, have a great weekend…

RevDrLuv

Is this your first St. Pats living downtown Seth? Find a parking space near your apartment now and leave your car there. Keep the children and womenfolk indoors at all times. You might want to go ahead and board up your windows and doors and hoard enough food/supplies to wait it out inside. It’s going to get nasty. Our city is now under the tyrannical occupation of savages.

Seth

Well, to close this ‘logue I’d just like to say that these sometimes seemingly outlandish thoughts should be discussed and pondered before they come to pass. After all, humanity wandered beyond the point of no return long ago. Our tools and machines will be with us until the end. One could say they are our children. And we are theirs.

That’s a good image, Seth - I think that’s my favorite out of the four - good job!

Seth

Thanks.

Aarseth

Truly, truly chilling. And I don’t mean like “chillin’.” I mean like some serious Matrix shit.

mrshape

this is my fav too seth, still working toward a final response..

heavy

man, seth this shit is hot. this is a really compelling image.

Excellent way to end this one! Incorporates returning elements and great use of text. Good coversation, mrshape. Look forward to another one sometime.

inman

Marshall McLuhan would certainly be proud.

bearskinrug

That’s a great finish, mrshape! You guys put together a great designologue, good job!

mrshape

lots of fun seth, great dsnlg concept!
