Jeromius and I work together in these ghastly things they call “cubes.” I’m sure you’re all familiar, 3 walls, no door, no ceiling. We’re always in desperate search for color, windows, and other common outside influence to engage our creativity. This DSNLG is an attempt to convey this search, and hopefully convey the utter hopelessness felt within the confines of these cube walls. On a side note, hey at least we’ve got jobs…

“I think I know somebody who’d like this”

bharper

“office space” much?

cowpiesurprise

The dirty brush feels pretty gratuitous here…

“We’re always in desperate search for color, windows, and other common outside influence to engage our creativity”

The dirty brush is used to prove the point of exploitation. Same with the rather retro looking Swingline logo. The image isn’t supposed to come across as original or unique in any way. The point is trying too hard and forcing creativity. Day in and day out we produce products, when the products are design or art, in order to produce them you’re objectified. You’re squeezed until something that’s overused is the result.

cowpiesurprise

Fair enough, that went over my head.

However, I do think the image would more clearly and successfully convey that idea if you went completely over the top and overloaded it with hackneyed design tricks, rather than just these two examples. Of course, I suppose it could be argued that insufficient development is wholly appropriate to the theme and this image succeeds as a failure, much in the way the brilliant film Adaptation did.

In any case, it’s food for thought and I’m definitely more intrigued by this dsnlg now than I was before!

jeromius

Let’s see how far we can ride this Office Space thing. BTW - nice capture of the charred swingline. Was that a DVD rip?

My god - this picture sums up how I feel about work.

bharper

haha.. i love that movie…

red stapler

randy

Maybe this DSNLG is over everyone’s head. It’s not just an Office Space fan logue, it’s about hell. You’ll never know hell until you’ve worked in a cubicle for over two years developing horrible assembly line graphics. You’ll never know hell until you can not only enjoy but relate to movies like Office Space. Trust me, you’ll never understand until you experience…

bharper

oh, sorry to give off an impression of lack of appreciation. the reason i enjoyed that movie was becauase i appreciate the 9-5 lifestyle. I was showing love vicariously through the movie, not avoiding the reality of your hell. I certianly know what it is like to have a shit job and get paid squat. I know what its like to have supervisors that cares more about the color of their piss (or a stapler) then the longevity of your job. so don’t get me wrong, i know this hell well.

randy

I’m sorry, that comment wasn’t directed at you. I was a bit intoxicated when I wrote that, it wasn’t very well thought out…

jeromius

hahaha - yeah, this isn´t really supposed to be a tribute to Office Space - even though that´s the direction it´s taking so far.

randy

My mind seriously wandered with this image. I wanted to do a clear cut adaptation from img2 but as conversations go I jumped to a new thing all together. The humour is still high at least. I mean, what’s more funny than Russian Roulette at a board metting.

heavy

hey i have that stapler…

i love how red swinglines didn’t even exist when they made the movie. then the demand was so great, they had to start making them. genius.

heavy

oh sorry, i was supposed to get more on topic. uh yeah, so like wouldn’t it have been funny if they were holding a stapler to their heads, kinda like office roulette? no? oh ok, maybe i will just shut up.

randy

Heavy, that would’ve been great! Too bad I didn’t think of it prior to uploading the pic. Maybe Jeromius will steal the idea.

bearskinrug

Great reply, Randy. That’s what SHOULD go on in the meetings I’ve been in.

cowpiesurprise

Okay, the idea of stapler roulette is pretty hilarious as a response to this image. And this image is awesome.

bharper

yeah, i really just want to say that i love image 2.. the text on the table but under the gun.. genius! fucking cool (am allowed to swear on here?..)

glorymachine

I do have to agree and say that this is a great image!

randy

Thanks so much!

jeromius

great image! I have a great follow-up for that. I´ll have to work on it when I get back from Mexico (I think I saw some guy drinking margaritas on the beach that looked like Milton).

jeromius

Here it goes - fits in nicely with the overall theme I think. (By the way, that’s an ACTUAL unemployment form ghosted in the background, compliments of my previous employer!)

I guess this wasn’t overly creative or anything, but think it pretty accurately illustrates the typical work day, as confined to cube life.

bharper

so how was the date with offic girl?

jeromius

Not that great, considering I’m married and she used to be a man.

randy

This is the most non-linear conversation I’ve ever been part of. Which is nice. Serves everyone with ADD well.

the picture of a snowy commute to and from home in img 04 gives me the creeps jer..makes your cube look downright warm and cozy :)

jeromius

I guess that my cube is my escape - it is sort of warm and fuzzy in a strange way.

I hate commuting.

I hope randy doesn’t - it appears he has quite the arsenal of handguns.

jeromius

a literal interpretation.

16 years ago, March 13, 2003
jeromius

2 hours - it took me 2 freaking hours to go 15 miles this morning.

I hate commuting. Just let me reiterate that point.

RevDrLuv

Man, you could have gotten there faster on a bicycle…

jeromius

yeah, i could have - if it wasn’t for this snow.

But now I’m in the comfort of my cube. All is well.

jel3

I LOVE CUBES!!!! WEEEEEEE!!!!! BANG!

jeromius

ha ha ha - yeah, cubes are pretty great.

I wish I could live in a cube ALL DAY LONG.

Oh … wait a minute… .

jeromius

randy - I know you ain’t been workin’ - what’s takin’ so long for you to reply?

randy

Don’t rush genius…

randy

I know I scrapped the entire previous image. I know I jumped to another thing all together. What can I say, I’m a dominant conversationalist? Anyone that’s ever worked in an office knows that at tumultuous times (i.e. War) there tends to be heavy tension. I can feel it here at work and couldn’t help but represent it in a DSNLG titled “living in CUBE.” This is my take on office politics. I sketched the background for work a while back, the donkey vs. elephant characters I sketched specifically for this DSNLG.

16 years ago, March 26, 2003
jeromius

bitchin.

I like the gunplay between the donkey and the elephant, very symbolic and a good representation.

Shit. I have to come up with something really good to close this log. I gotta sit my ass down and come up with something good!

inman

Nice work randy! The flat shading contrasting with the pencil lines is oh so right.

randy

Man! It doesn’t look like movefast-standstill img 5 is getting beat. I wanted this to be my highest rated image… Whatever…

jel3

office power strugle at its finest…

jeromius

once again, I have to comment on how much I like this image. It should be your highest rated, because it really is great!

I’ve been in a creative funk lately, and everything comes out looking like crap. I think I might need to pull out the sketch pad to come up with a reply to img 7.

bearskinrug

You’ve got a great style here, randy. Good work!

jeromius

designer’s block sucks.

Very well done series. One of my favorites. Good job guys.

jeromius

man … looking back over some of my old logs …

I was a stock photo whore.

“Man! It doesn’t look like movefast-standstill img 5 is getting beat. I wanted this to be my highest rated image… Whatever…”

looks like your wish came true after all…

great image!
