nerdartist
can you tell me a little bit about how you made this image?
good start nerdartist and welcome to the site. there aren’t enough nerd artists around here already ;) i like the theme and how you got to it. I’ve never had a wacom, but I’ve used one, so part of me misses it every day.
Well, the original idea was to demonstrate the horrors of drawing with a mouse, but I wasn’t really going anywhere with that.
So then I was flipping through my pictures and saw this rainbow, and started thinking about how rainbows are filled with possibilities, no single color involved, just a gradation through the spectrum. Sure there’s yellow in a rainbow, but where? So there’s also the sense of not being able to put your finger on something, something misplaced. Like my Wacom pen.
If I had my Wacom pen, I tell myself, I could draw something ten times more beautiful than a rainbow. So I tried to capture that sadness, with the image treatment and the text.
Short version: I started out with the pen as an object, and ended up going with the loss.
Oh, but if you mean like what buttons did I press, well, there was some color adjustment and filtering of a picture I took earlier this year, and the text was set to (I think?) Darken or Multiply. Not much, but I was happy with the simplicity and didn’t want to overwork it.

Honestly, I’m not crazy about this dsnlg in general. I really did loose my Wacom and I’m not very happy about it.
wa-what is that B? if I had to guess, I’d say tapeworm. i don’t really know what a tapeworm looks like
bleeding?
Of course he’s bleeding and lost in Waco, TX.
It’s abstract. It’s a rainbow. It’s a black hole. It’s a tapeworm.
I don’t like this one much either… but I’m too saddened by abandoned DSNLGs, so maybe we can take it in a new direction?
no. 240: Now Showing seemed like it was coming back to life for a while after they decided it sucked.
Ok, we agree it sucks. Now let’s see where you take it.
I don’t get it but I kinda like it, minus the type. The background is strangely pretty.
just so you all know what i was thinking on this one, i sorta treated it like an abstract painting, using the previous image as the pallette. i just kept playing with the last image till i had something i liked. im not crazy about the type, but ive never been very good with type… i’d like to get better.
heh, i was just thinking of going to type as an example of “well, what can i do without a wacom pen”
but i’m not promising anything.

Sorry I didn’t go typographic, but I just had to use that blood.
This typeface is a bit more polished than the true handwritten I had wanted initially, but the S echoed the knot decorations so well I had to go with it.
I know there was that idea of a less depressing direction, but I’m hoping that by leaving the laptop around Santa Claus might pick up on the hint…
this image brings up strong issues of femininity to me. Maybe im reading between the lines, or thighs.. but YIKEs.. so much pink.. so much blood.. not sure i know what to do with this..
Ewwwww. Totally unintended. Ewwww.
If it helps you break the menstrual metaphor, remember that the garment pictured is a collar, and my computer is an iBook which leads to the touchpad.
All I was going for was blood and murder, honest…
oh, now i get it.
sorry.
I have to admit, the m-bomb was the first thing that came to my mind too. I stepped back and thought about it and realized where you were going with it but I still can’t shake that initial impression.
Yes, I said m-bomb.
Pretending I had put that allusion in there on purpose, this could be the new direction, actually.
Whining about a Wacom pen while bringing up the things in life that Really Suck.
If only I was as smart as my subconscious.
(Here’s the stumper of the day: if you didn’t know I was female, would you have jumped to that conclusion?)
Yes, nerdartist. No man would make this image.
That’s not an insult, just the truth. Distinctly female.
the M - BOMB..
< no he didn’t…
hahahha….
I think I still would have come to the same initial conclusion. I think a guy would have show some cleavage—intentionally or not (I’m being serious).
Besides that neglige is far too delicate for a man to appreciate.
Well, it’s hard to show cleavage when you throw a dress onto a scanner…
Next time I’ll try for some nipples, will that make you boys happy?
Oh lord, please don’t go and get them started…
Openin’ a flood gate there lil missy!
Will no one comment on how fucking luscious this dress looks — it’s crazy hyper-real. The only thing I’m not crazy about is the type…however, the type from the previous image is integrated quite nicely. I would’ve liked to have seen the same done with the new type — maybe in the color of the blood red or the darker leaves of the embroidery on the dress.
I like this image quite a bit — especially the implied motion of the lines of the dress.
I like the initial scan of the dress.. that part is cool.. the textures and depth and color and all is nice… but the blood has this wierd blur or drop shadow type effect that screws up the depth for me… and the text / type is flat and breaks the plane of dimensionality….
and some how, the word TOUCH PAD in this context is making me think about anything but a computer..
It was originally a haiku:
life without my pen a touchpad is not enough this is killing me
but “life without my pen” seemed redundant, though maybe it would have steered you away from the m-bomb.

If this sucks, and I hope it does in a good way, I’ll blame it on the fact that i just watched behind the music, britney spears, on VH1.
This sorta makes me throw up a little..
usualy, i don’t get sick of dsnlgs… but this topic just doesn’t have much breadth or depth, ya feel me?
you’re a poet and I didn’t know it. I just wish you’d done something specifically tearing up the ‘Now’ cd collections and points to you two for pushing through a series that you’re not even that into
is there a specific song that these lyrics go to? i don’t know much britney…
but i totally see this in the “something that sucks more than losing my pen” vein. i’d say more but it’s late… will say more later, i’m sure.
no these lyrics are vintage Ben Harper.
mad props for posting something you know is crap.
I feel like that every time I post.
Try Oh, Tannenbaum.
you know….. I still have my wacom, so my Holiday was alright to begin with. Sucks for those nerdartists out there who don’t got theirs. Maybe Santa(SATAN) will bring you one this year…
Well Jermious, this one was intentionaly crappy. I hope that comes through!
i wish i hadnt posted this image.. it doesnt suck in a good way, it just plain sucks…
hows the next one coming?
I know B. I know.
What do you know, your stuff is never bad like this.
Yea, some of that was crap. But you seem to forget my Aligator >
Finally back to the left coast, getting the computer back tonight. Hope to have something soon!
Except I have no idea what to do. So maybe not so soon. But happy new year all!

Sometimes when your conversation is going nowhere, it’s best to incorporate the lively discussion at the next table.
Next dsnlg will be less depressing. Because who besides angsty teenagers can really thrive on depressing art? I’m still happy that we took this in a newish direction midway through.
You guys are going to get me in trouble with this one. Designologue and ShaunInman.com are already like the other woman - we don’t need a face to the name. ;D
Nice cross-over from Highschool Notebook though…
Yeah, I was working on it last night and my boyfriend wondered what it was, so I tried to explain Highschool Notebook, and the tie-in, and his eyes just sort of glazed… like I do when he talks about kernel coding.
But at least it reminded him that he promised to order me a new pen for Christmas…
(double. grr.)
In other news, that picture is not of me.
very clever…
wa-huh? here is a man dedicated to…uh…something. very funny. but creepy (I should know)
hey ben, that looks like it fits you pretty well. isn’t your wife really short?
Na, my stepsister got that piece of crap nightie for my wife as a wedding gift. She hates it, and who wouldn’t? It’s ugly as shit.
Looks hot on me, tho.
Brilliant!
amazing XD
Aren’t wedding presents to remind you of the person who gave them? This platter was from Aunt Jean, this tablecloth was from cousin Fran. Sexy nighties and step sisters? Ewww.
In other news, I FOUND MY WACOM PEN!!! Just proves that if you put a desire out in the world, it might just happen. For some reason, it was in a pile of clothes that I obviously haven’t worn in quite some time.
How funny, I hope you can tell from my image that I found my wacom pen also.
Nerdy, I hope you don’t think i’m creepy.
Nah, you’re not creepy. Jury’s out on that step sister, though.
When did you find yours?
When did I find my stepsister? Uh… When I was 10 or so, I guess.
She’s harmless. Bad taste, but harmless.
No, when did you find your pen :p
Oh, duh. I’m stupid sometimes. I found my pen around image 6.
ben, I had no idea you were so pretty.
aww shux..
he he.
This certainly turned out different than what I had intended to do…
