i wanted to show that candy has its good sides and bad sides.

bharper

This, then, would be the bad side?

commudesmax

I just got busted by my co-worker checking out DSLG…ha.

The first thing my co-worker said” Ew….what is it?”

Wizdom

The main thing I took away from that communication was not that candy has good and bad sides, but the phrase “eye candy” so I decided to explore that further.

commudesmax

Ah….a nice booty is always a good eye candy. I like this image. Will it be better if the area where above the sea and the last image can blend….just a little bit better, or do it in a different way, I think the image will be even better. Because those little candies kind of bothers me.^_^ Just a thought~

Wizdom

Yeah, you are right. I should have taken more time and blended it a tad better. It was supposed to be the sky area, but I see your concern. Thanks for the comment.

bharper

A sexy ass, a good image does not make.

Beerad

The first image hurt to look at. Second image, its really hard to read the type. Are those legs from another person?

g3aR

my intention wasnt to be mean. only showing some causes of to much “intake” of candY.

Wizdom

Well, here we go. Please guys, do keep in mind that this is I and .gear’s first times doing this sort of thing. Thanks and enjoy ;)

bharper

is that the Plastic Wrap filter?

bharper

I kinda dig #4 in a strange way…

Wizdom

Yes, it is the plastic wrap filter. I decided to give it that filter look, I’m not sure why but for some reason I was likin’ the way it looked. Like you, I’m also digging it in a strange way. I think it is the colors.

g3aR

it’s different but i like it.

jeez guys thanks for the comments of image|3

Lincoln

well, he only gave us 25 minutes to comment, but if you really want some…um, a fat ass, a good image does not make? I’m still trying to figure out if the ‘to(o) much candy?’ was spelled wrong on purpose, since you got it right in ‘its almost too good’

but the quicky 4th one is my favorite so far, (I could do without the candy cane border on the far left and the smeary blue border in the middle)…leads me to think you work better, faster…so i wanna see some crazy ass shit by tomorrow morning.

inVZbl

no offence, gotta hate those plastic wrap filters… basically most of the “candy” filters are crappy.

the ideas within this logue are okay, but the execution seems abit rushed. Take some time to develop the visuals abit more, which will enhance the concepts even further.

cowpiesurprise

Okay, you’re new to Designologue and you’re looking for some commentary on your work. By the looks of these images, and hopefully without sounding too condescending, I’m going to venture a guess that you’re fairly new to design as well. So first of all, welcome! Now on to the unpleasantries. These first four images each fit my criteria for a rating of “1”; that is, they don’t address the theme in any particularly interesting or insightful way, and they demonstrate little or no understanding of basic design principles. This may be due in part to the blazing speed of this conversation, but I still gather that you guys have a lot to learn, particularly with regard to typography, general composition, and visual thinking. The best way to learn is to absorb as much design as possible (which isn’t hard to do in a global consumer culture), but if you’re looking for something more like a handbook, allow me to suggest Robert Bringhurst’s Elements of Typographic Style and Josef Müller-Brockmann’s Grid Systems in Graphic Design. The most important advice I can give you relevant to this particular designologue is this: Don’t let Photoshop do the thinking for you.

I’m no graphic design genius, and I mean no offense with any of these comments. I’m just being honest and I hope you find some of this stuff helpful.

g3aR

ok thanks for the comments well compared to most of u i am considered “noobie” but i dont think my cousin [Wizdom] is “noobie” i think he was just rushed…

monkeycyclops

Rushed? Was there a time limit?

Wizdom

Hey guys,

Time to speak for myself I suppose. First of all, I don’t really think .gear or myself were looking to do any extremely insightful work the first time around. That is easily seen and apparantly easily discriminated. I will keep that in mind further on. I do plan on making the next louge I have quite interesting.

As far as my rushing, you are right, I am. I am an Art Director in Advertising and with my current schedule, I have little to no time for this logue. It isn’t that I don’t care or want to do it, it is just that I approached it differently. I fiured, “hey, if I have little time, lets see what I can really do in a rush,” and decided to go ape-crazy on the speed issue.

So basically, I decided to work as fast as possible and see what comes out. This is an exercise in speed and quick thinking for me more than anything else. Keep that in mind. Perhaps the theme for me should have been speed.

I take no offense to the comment on the filter. I did it ON PURPOSE. As soon as some people bother to read the comments and see that, they will understand it better. Still, I don’t mind the criticism, I get more of it in a day in an ad agency then most people get in a life time. And I love it, i thrive off of criticism, but my cousin .Gear is not at that level yet.

Trust me, I’ll take my time on this next one and see what comes out. Enjoy and do yourselves a favor guys…everybody smile.

Lincoln

rock on. i’m all for a little bit of sloppy playing. especially if you’re getting your feet wet. this site is recreational ya, know

Beerad

Well I don’t know what to say that hasn’t been said. And then after reading what Wizdom posted, I understand a little more. So Yeah.. welcome.

creighton

Wizdom,

Sorry for not having posted yet, but I’m actually enjoying this logue. A lot of times we’re really nit-picky with these, especially with the good people. There’s definitely a lot of concept and true “conversation” going on here, and I don’t think anyone has anything to gripe about with that.

As you said, it looks rushed because it is rushed. But again, I like this one — especially the last image. Very nice juxtaposition of imagery…and I personally like the filter treatment. Something about it fits very well — especially next to the illustrated candy-cane. The woman feels very painterly just because of that juxtaposition.

Keep going with this. It’s great. And .g3aR (damn your name’s 2 l33t 4 m3 — and hard to type), welcome aboard. The only way to get better is to play play play. We’ve got plenty of veterans and newbees alike on here. Sometimes we’re too serious about things. But believe me, there’s quite a bit of humor floating around.

No one has any complaining to do, especially if they’re not participating themselves.

Again, welcome to the crack that is DSNLG.

g3aR

Wizdom

Well, here it is, my last attempt to win the public’s love. Haha, not really, I just like it. How’s that for time ;)

16 years ago, June 4, 2004
g3aR

ya i decided to grunge it up!

check it out Wizdom did his 2 mins after mine! lol haha!

Lincoln

i’m not fallin for that I did almost quickly drop you a 4 (for time and a pretty interesting image) but then I realized that yours has more of the background than the one before it…which means you’re one helluva quick redrawer or you’re switchin psd’s behind our backs

instead i give it a 1 because I feel hurt and betrayed

Lincoln

(btw, nuthin wrong with switching psd’s)

inman

Oh, so we’ve devolved to ego-driven drivel—how fun.

That’s a really strong composition Wizdom but your pshop filters and turn around time are highly suspect.

inman

(I think it probably took Lincoln and I both longer to write our comments than your return indicates you spent on the image. It is endearing to see two brothers collaborating though.)

Lincoln

cousins

inman

Now I feel hurt and betrayed. Preying on my fraternal sentimentality, how cruel. ;D

Sorry I’m new here is there an FAQ I can read?

Wizdom

Haha, thanks guys. I must admit though, I didn’t actually do this image in 2 minutes, that was just a slight joke [MAIL=”.g3@r”].g3@r[/MAIL] and myself decided to play on you guys. This took me a bit longer and yes, we swopped .psd files.

I’d like some input on what you guys use for effects. That computer has a horde of filters over it, as well as, some smudging and a couple other crazy tricks, but I still find it lacking. Gimmie some input please :)

Beerad

switching psd files seems wrong. I was working a Densignlogue with someone I see just about daily and never once did we give each other the psd file. (Might of helped with the score if we did) It was our first logue and we learned. Image 6 is my favorite looking so far, Even if I do get why cany is comming out of a washing machine. On filters from seeing what has been happening here, it seems like alot of other DSNLG have stuff hand drawn. Filters that will all know, brushes we either have or seen and stock art that is up on corbis or on our hard drives are usally look a little down on. Don’t get me wrong I love using the dirty brushes I have. I still have little idea what this all has to do with candy…

g3aR

wrong as in unfair?

inman

Hmm, it’s not expressly stated anywhere on the site anymore but the idea has always been the exchange of flattened images. That’s why the images are saved as pngs because it is a lossless compression format. Extracting and resusing pieces from a flattened image has always been part of the challenge/fun of Designologue.

As for tricks Wizdom, Photoshop filters and layer effects can contribute to the overall success of an image but more often than not anything less than their subtle use inevitably cheapens the end result. The success of a design rests equally on content and composition. Canned filters are meaningless eye candy unless they have a context. I’m not seeing that context in this designologue.

commudesmax

me like the background texture on image 6(and 5 of course). but me have questions…..

If candy is the theme, what no contest mean in here…? or is this image just trying to give us some “eye canndy”

me no understand…….>_

Wizdom

Hey guys…

At a ripe old age of 22 it is odd that I know that that is an old mac, not a washing machine. For goodness sake, I’m not that geriatric, not at all. As far as the “no contest” written on there, I suggest you go back and look at .gear’s piece right before it (5), which says “.gear vs. wizdom.” Therefore, “no contest” is a response to his “versus” statement. The computer with the candy coming out of it is a simple look at this whole theme, of us using our computers to produce art/communication revolving around candy. With that being said, I think I explained it well and did an good job of showing it.

.Gear, I absolutely love your question there. “Wrong as in unfair?” Basically, Beerad, you were complaining about it more than proving a point. We did not exchange .psd files until this last one we posted. As far as “learning” by not exchanging .psd files, I don’t see how the real learning takes place other than limiting yourself to what you want to cut out and paste. If your argument is about original artwork, I used it, both the candy cane and computer pic are.

Anyway, as far as the filtering goes, thanks for the input guys. Although there was little more than scrutinty presented, I will take that as “Hey! Eventhough you are play Photoshop Ping Pong, you aren’t supposed to use Photoshop!” Anyway, at this point in this dialogue, I don’t see the point of switching styles (non-ps filters) or worrying about score. This was for fun, and fun I WAS having.

Beerad

I think there was very little complaining happening. All I said was what I did. Still looks like a washing machine with the top cut off. I get the point you are trying to make with the image now… An Art Director in Advertising at 22, thats pretty good. I am also suprised by the amont of comments on this logue.

Wizdom

Thanks man.

g3aR

ill work on my next image over the weekend. im not gonna be near an internet source until sunday night ill upload it then!

commudesmax

me understand now, thanks wizdom. Yeah Beerad…it is an old school computer, it no washing machine….it looks more like an oven than washing machine….weee~~~~~~~~~~~

Beerad

Man, I see the oven to…

bharper

I thought it was a washing machine

g3aR

sorry guys ill get working on my last one soon ive been real busy lately

g3aR

this was major rush job… it has no message intended….. or i made it with no message intended

16 years ago, June 8, 2004
inman

Then you shouldn’t have wasted the server space.

monkeycyclops

You make it sound as though there was a client on your ass to get it done. Take your time and think about why you are doing things!

g3aR

wizdom be rushing me!

Wizdom

I think it speaks for itself, as well as, .Gear’s. ;)

The next logue should be much more interesting, but I did ilke this one none the less, it was fun to just mess around a bit.

16 years ago, June 8, 2004
g3aR

inman if u want to delete it plz do…….

commudesmax

no need to delete. just remember what is wrong with it, and make it better next time^_^

I did more horrible job than you do before, wha ha ha ha ha ha

inman

What Maxi said, we don’t delete designologues. That’s why it’s better to take your time and produce something worthwhile—whether you’re having fun or not.

Wizdom

Who wants to do a logue with me? I promise to take my time! :)

-Wiz

Beerad

Well its done, its picked up there in the end. Trash can from OS9…. Are you not using OS X yet?

Wizdom

I am. Just felt nostalgic ;)

Number 8, is the perfect ending for number 4 - 7..
