Designologue
I like this one. where was it headed?
We had talked about girls on their cell phones, internet pornography and birds on telephone wires. But spo0ky doesn’t have time to play. You up for it, Lincoln?
well, ya know I am gonna be pretty busy hosting the G8 with G.W. (canada’s gonna be crashing on my couch) but I guess I could make time.
This one is kinda neat. How did you make those lines?
Hmm, Ben maybe you should pick up a copy of Photoshop Secrets of the Pros. I’m pretty sure I explain how I did it in there. ;D
Great. I’ll sign you up Lincoln. You won’t be getting an email or anything but some time tonight this DSNLG will show up in your list of active designologues.
Now remember, you’re picking up where an English photographer chick left off so try to stay in character.
Lincoln’s good at staying in character. You should see him play the “blind-folded bisexual goat herder”. Definitely one of his better role-playing characters.
Bring it on…this one is gonna be good.
Wouldn’t girls on cellphones be birds off a wire?
valid point. ha!
Maybe cell phones have wires in the UK—half their words have Us where they don’t belong. Half the world has the US where we don’t belong. Ha!
What about those earbud/headset-thingies with the clip on mics? Wired from hip to ear?
Wires on a bird? They’re all extensions of the theme. :D

tried to carry it over visually more than I usually do, but damn it. I don’t know how to make those neat-o lines. guess I’m gonna have to buy your stinky book
sweet. i’m glad this dsnlg didn’t die.
nice torch carrying, don’t even know who the original conspiritor was… Where did that bridge come from? Is that the bridge that that (FV) one dude thought he bought, when he bought the London Bridge and had it shipped brick by brick? marathon sentence steeze yo.
tacosaurus.blah.
First off, FV ain’t a dude and I don’t think she be buying any bridges lately. But people do change when they move out to LA…
Nice one Lincoln, I want to get started on my response right now, but you know—that whole work thing. This designologue has become unstuck in time. Poo-tee-weet.
I’ll try to get something up this weekend but we have a friend in town till Sunday and then both of our families are coming for the holidays on Tuesday so I’m not sure when I’m going to be able to make the time.
The only critical comment I have is that I wish the texture/grit from the bottom band was present in the London Bridge. The tower feels flat by comparison.
I said (FV) referencing back to when she used that that in a sentence. That isn’t the real London Bridge.
? Taco- you were the one that said it was the london bridge but I’m pretty sure it is anyway.
Whoa switch in ppl, damn inman can make anything happen!
I realize that Taco, I thought you of all people would have picked up that both of my statements were intentionally off. :P
Yeah Rev, I’m like Harry-fucking-Potter.
no…. that’s Tower Bridge. Some guy thought it was London Bridge, but it turns out it wasn’t. So the guy bought and shipped the wrong bridge to Arizona. I think he realized it, but didn’t want to look like a complete asshole, so he kept his end of the deal.
reread carefully. above statement.
I was just pointing out details in your images again Lincoln. You should have realized that by now.
oh, i get it french class
tangential drifting…
These are both lovely images. Lincoln did a great job in keeping with the style. But they’re not really all that deep, concept-wise… What comes next?
good question. i dunno. we’ll come up with something. but if its thin on concept, is that neccessarily wrong?

Bird on Birds on a Wire. What can brown do for you?
I decided to focus more on composition than content this round robin. Yes, yes, I even used the obvious image number.
I took this photo with my new digital camera while in DC with my family the day after Christmas. We were waiting outside the Museum of Transportation and people were feeding the birds popcorn. I have no idea what type of bird this is. All I know is that I love my 10X optical zoom.
I was going for a sort of cut-out composition so my clipping mask on the bird is intentionally geometric and loose. I was thinking we could slowly build up layers keeping the palette and elements the same or similar throughout this DSNLG (based on your original retort) but feel free to run with it as you see fit.
the photo is nice inman. i would have big issues with this image had you not taken the bird photo. that being said, there is not much else NEW in this image. it required much less technicaly then i’ve come to expect from you.. it works ok tho.. the photo is intriguing… and the tetures are interesting inside the bird…
and that repeating line break tesselating tile crap on the far left seems a little misplaced to me.. or just not as polished as i would like
Lincoln’s previous image had mangled the repeating background tile in a few places (which I didn’t even notice at first). Correcting it significantly reduced the width of the image so I just duplicated part of it on the left and then accented the separation by stopping the texture where the duplicated section starts.
Sorry to disappoint but the point here was to preserve as much of the previous image as possible. Just practicing what I preach Ben (albeit in an exaggerated fashion).
I kinda agree with ben about the strip on the left. doesn’t seem complete, but I don’t know what I’d do with it. sorry about my mangling. I’m just a mangler. what font is that you’re using for the boxed ‘bird’ and ‘wire’ text?
and where is the ‘obvious image number’?
Aligned right, under “Bird on Birds on a Wire.” Maybe too low contrast for those of you on PCs with your dark monitors, “Pecking Order: 003”
As for the type, it’s one of the miniml.com faces and although I can’t remember which one I’d have to guess Hooge.
crap, I’ve gotta get a better monitor. I couldn’t see that at all. I took it into PS and raised the brightness… couldn’t read it till the brightness was at +35 then I grabbed my last image and raised the brightness on it to the same level and suddenly I could see the ugly mangling loud and clear.
Don’t worry about the mangling. I’m just SuperAnal. I’m wearing a blue shirt right now with a gold capital A on a red shield with gold trim. Pixel-shift is my cryptonite. Bling-Bling.
…in case you needed more visuals for your high school notebook DSNLG. ;D
amo, amo and more amo!
That’s “amore!” I mean, “ammo.”
amo? I know a moe. Is v4 gonna have a spellcheck?
wha-huh?…k, I don’t get it. why does this look darker than the last image here but not in photoshop?
i like the layering that’s going on img2>>img4. sue’s headset is off the hook.
i like it darker. i thought you did that on purpose :)
That’s so hot. Hieronymus Bosch has nothing on you, Abe. I’m going to need to reflect on this for a bit.
Re: wha-huh? My last image was lighter than the image before even though I didn’t touch the brownground. It has something to do with the color profile embedded in the png. Screwy, no?
Re: Spellcheck in v4, no. My browser of choice has built-in spellcheck so I can’t be bothered to write a spellchecker. I don’t know if I have the chops anyways. Sorry. :D
I was just kiddin. this site’s got plenty of spellcheckers.
but why so many sues?
p.s. HOT!
these are sweet i’m really digging the slow progression and lincoln, this new twist on conept— muy bueno
just one sue. its a timeline. or her dialogue or something. it was gonna be one bird gossiping about all the other birds. pecking order but as I started giving names to them, I saw this story come out of it about sue and her goodfernuthin man, larry. he gets his in the end.
oh, i geet eet
it seems to me that becky is making the rounds. looks like she’s shacking up with larry, robert, and rico.
way to go on the sexual empowerment becky, way to go.
Looks like Sue’s been listening to a little AC/DC—if you know what I mean. The timeline reads like an episode of one of those crappy Fox reality-STD, I mean, -TV shows. ;D
Maybe tomorrow night Abraham. :D
Looking good gents - I like the limited palette!
“ZAP!?” After staring at Lincoln’s image for 3 months and spending 2 hours on this image all I can come up with is “ZAP!?”
Well, I did add a new color. Maybe the “ZAP!” was appropriate…
yeah, what’s up with this color thing? and bright orange?! you’re messing with my blah-style
no, i like the orange, (safety orange?) what’s goin on here? is that a ledge with bird deterring spiky things on the left? (I remember all the birds hanging out all over those at Walland hall.) heart monitoring? bra size? aight am i on the right track here? where am i going? who is driving car?
Orange? I think I covered that already. ;D
Yes, those are pigeon wires. Heart monitor is a go as well. Bra size? Nope. Just some nice type from the aforementioned EKG.
Again, I’m just working with composition and contrast really. Kind of dropping the ball on concept—but if I had to make something up I’d go with safety orange, maybe something about shock from birds perched on a live wire or pigeon wire…how about PTDs? Or PWTDs?
Far less literal than your previous design. Definitely more litter-al.
One time whilsth travelling in the traffic with my mother. We happened upon a wire of birds, overrun by birds, yet they were hanging upside down. I asked my mom what was wrong with the birds and she said, FUCK, I don’t know, they look like they all got shocked and fucking died!. Atlanta, circa, 1989.
the only thing that made me give it a 7.8, was the texture in the background…
7.8 = 4
that’s kinda cool.
Thanks B. I’m thinking I could distill it into a cool vector illustration for a tee. Use the same color brown as the winning T:SNLG shirt with orange, creme, and a darker brown ink.
I might try my hand at that…
I’d put down my hard earned cash for one of these. Give me an excuse to pick up taco’s shirt while I’m at it and save on shipping.
besta check the stock chart on my shirt, it’s runnin’ low.
Alright, I opted of a khaki tee (better contrast against my brown spring jacket :P). Live Wire (You can click and drag to zoom in. Click again to zoom out.). What do you guys think of the placement?
I really like it, but i think it should be a little smaller. As far as placement, it looks good where it is, but it would also look good if it was off centered and up on the chest too. Definately smaller though.
I agree, smaller, off-centered and up on the chest.
It would be cool to get Larry, Sue, Robert, Mary and the rest of the gang in there in a strip below the design. I am not sure how you would translate the information effectively in a vector illustration though.
Hmm, smaller? By how much you think?
I’m considering replacing the lighter brown with a transparent ink like Permafrost Pollution. That would significantly lighten the crooked, rounded box area. Think it would it still require reduction after that?
I am not thinking it needs to be drastically smaller. Just reduced by 15-20%. So the big bird is only about half as wide as the chest width.
Oh and I’m concerned about the details getting lost at a smaller size. How long has it been since I did a print project? Easily a year and a half.
And Rev. it’s a shame I couldn’t come up with an interesting way to work the band of birds in there but I think it’s getting busy as is.
Haha, our posts keep overlapping. I’ll give that 15-20% a shot and post an updated version
At the size I am proposing you go I don’t think the detail would get lost. The type detail on this design is very small, but still legible on the printed shirt.
I don’t know about it being higher on the chest though. I think this is pretty hot (the shirt, not the dude).
Anywhere from 65%-75% smaller.
Sometimes large designs can be obtrusive. hot day and the design is gonna stick to you.
LOL that would be an icon or logo then taco
not really, it is pretty big to begin with…
maybe 75%-85%, that sounds a little better to me.
This thing is gonna be a challenge to print too…
that looks nice rev.
I still say, just a little smaller…
And seriously the details have been just as fine on other shirts that threadless has printed succesfully.
I could still go either way on the last two sizes though.
I think having it up over the left breast makes it look like it’s trying to be something it’s not. Feels too big to be where it is. At that size it should be centered. Or less off-centered. It’s not confrontational enough to be a front and center design.
I think the placement in the lower left leads the eye somewhere it doesn’t normally go - which makes up for the lack of message in the design.
That was my thought anyway.
or maybe its a confidence thing. u just dont think it looks good enough to be up top.
but it does.
or maybe im projecting.
That’s a good point as far as placement goes inman. It seems like it is trying too hard when it is on the chest.
I think Rev’s last size change lowered in the corner works.
Not because the design is weak, but because it seems like it shouldn’t have negative space below it.
Not me, I think the empty space the design leaves on the chest when it is so low is very awkward.
Also: I think the the design works being off-centered on the chest because of the dark birds beak. It is the sharpest detail on the design and IMO works well a a sort of entry point for the overall shirt composition.
I was just thinking along the lines that the birds were standing. It would make sense that they stood at the bottom of the shirt, as if the the wire was implied by the rim of the shirt meeting the pants.
i like your original placement Inman. it is a bit awkward looking. tees don’t normally use space like that, but for me that makes it better.
re: “I think the placement in the lower left leads the eye somewhere it doesn’t normally go ” yeah, where exactly are those birds pecking at?
Oh be quiet you brown-noser!
I think you’re out numbered Rev. Bottom left it is. I’ll resize the artwork and post it to Threadless tonight. And Lincoln, they’re pecking at exactly what you think they’re pecking at.
Well, it’s done. Submitted. Now we wait until it goes live for scoring.
I don’t know if I stick to my guns too often or not enough…
How does a design qualify for printing on threadless? I realize that people vote - but a high score doesn’t seem to be the determining factor…
You know, I’m not really sure zdoob. It could be score over the number of inks used. I’m sure they’ve got some equation. I’m hoping it’s political since I’m kindof “in” with one of the Jakes.;D Maybe I could grease the wheels by fronting some money. Who know?. Skaw sometimes lurks about. Maybe he could shed some light on the deciding factors.
Either way I’m interested to see how it plays out. I’ll let you guys know when you can score the design.
Lincoln, if my last piece wasn’t enough to move forward with then you should check this out, Robert Josiah is onto bird art. His site is spectacularly understated and understatedly spectacular.
And he mentions what this designologue was initially about: the ubiquity of people and an individual’s uniqueness despite the surplus.
“Oh no, bear driving car, how can that be?!”
Sorry, I just got that reference ol Log Head made almost a month ago.
Yo Lincoln, I’m waiting to see your stuff
I really like the textures and the slight modifications to the birds and the measurement system.
I like the Ree ertisement! in its own right, but I don’t think it really goes with the rest of the piece.
I’m not going to comment on this until you chaps figure out the context of the piece. Inman, where you at?
heh.
clever.
very clever.
Clever indeed. I like the idea but the execution leaves a little to be desired. Everything seems a little too blurry and a tad dark (because of the printing).
I know where to go conceptually but I’m not sure how to build visually on this one.
Give me a couple of months. ;D
yea, agreed. this one’s another victim of the late night rush. Once I finally had an idea to work with, i kinda hurried it out before bedtime.
but i do like that the orange bird’s head got cocked to the side in the process.
i didn’t mean to do it on purpose
LOL Did you?
Ha ha ha, Brilliant!
I really enjoy what I’m seeing here. This is a great theme.

Through the smog of modern cities, billboards are for the birds.
On a wire.
Betcha didn’t see this one coming.
The source images: Birds on a Wire Skyline Billboard and the previous image, of course.
The inspiration: Beautiful work from the Heads of State.
very well done. i like the sense of depth, and the composition. thanks for sharing the source images.
you’re on a roll today inman. what’s next? v4? ;)
one thing im not sure of.. is the innder shadow of the larger black bird on the billboard.. it sorta makes it feel sunk-in but billboards are flat..
otherwise.. i enjoy this one..
“you’re on a roll today inman. what’s next? v4?”
Haha, we should all be so lucky. The site has been pretty sluggish performance-wise. Could use a tune-up.
Ah, v4, next time I find myself unemployed, you’ve got a date.
dont think i haven’t already checked it out… :D
not to be a dick, but this site has been really really sluggish! why is that?
Nah, you’re not being a dick, you speak the truth. I think it’s a database issue. I was still a relative newb when I coded this version of Designologue. There are a lot of things that could be done to normalize the database and speed up my code. With so many paying gigs though I just don’t have time at present to address the issues.
Not having posted an image in exactly 10 months has really distanced me from the issue as well. Out of sight, out of mind. Maybe after New Years I’ll dedicate some time to cleaning it all up or starting fresh.
Dick. ;)
“With so many paying gigs though I just don’t have time at present to address the issues.”
NOW who’s being a dick?! ;)
Lincoln! HOLLAH!?
HOLLAH! Shots out to ma’ boy inman He’s got da freshest meats.
cough I dig it. clever. looks great. and good treatment from the sources.

contrast and ‘proper perspective’ can bite me!
‘s been fun inman. thanks. …yea, now i should finally have an open slot to start a brand new dsnlg to neglect.
“I Designologued with Shaun Inman and all I got was this lousy T-shirt” ;p
Ha! I gave you a 4.0 just for that comment!
Dare I even comment on such greatness? Great logue, thanks for the shirt Inman, now all the ladies love me.
Always guaranteed 100% Fresh…
Great Logue!
Thanks EuRip, Lincoln always does Designologue proud!
is that penguins on the roof?
Hi I love the work here, Redfig
…
